PML and Kenya Airways launch Nairobi-London charter flights

Perishable logistics firm PML is investing in chartering its own airfreight flights to help maintain fresh produce supply chains in the UK during the pandemic and post-Brexit.

The company is working with Kenya Airways to charter a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft between Nairobi and Heathrow twice a week.

The aircraft has been modified to increase its capacity to 42 tonnes.

The chartered flights, which commenced on November 18 and are running until the end of next month, are carrying perishable goods on behalf of PML’s clients looking to export out of Kenya.

Fresh produce on the flights is being moved from Nairobi to the UK on the same day “representing the speedy transfer that is key to maintaining the quality and shelf life of any fresh produce consignment”.

PML sales director Nick Finbow commented: “We remain committed to providing a seamless service to our clients and with the competition to secure availability on chartered air freight services becoming increasingly intense, we were keen to identify a solution that would ensure our ability to guarantee the fastest transfer of perishable goods. The response to this service has been very positive and we anticipate that the flights will be operating at full capacity, both up to Christmas and beyond, when the Brexit restrictions come into force, which are likely to severely impact on the supply chain business.”
