Supply chain organisation Pharma.Aero has developed a new sustainability index to help air cargo companies involved in the transport of pharmaceuticals improve their environmental impact.

The new Lane Sustainability Readiness Index is part of a white paper that the pharma organisation has recently launched based on the findings of its Green Air Pharma Logistics Project.

The index measures the sustainability readiness of stakeholders across the airport-to-airport supply chain and helps them identify improvements.

“The introduction of the [index] serves as a pivotal tool for life science manufacturers and freight forwarders to make informed decisions in selecting sustainable options that align with their environmental objectives,” Pharma.Aero explained.

“Moreover, this initiative aims to drive continuous improvements and elevate the overall sustainability of air transportation.”

The index is formulated by companies completing a self-assessment questionnaire that reviews airlines, airports and ground handlers against a series of six main criteria and several sub-criteria.

“The decarbonisation of air transportation is a multifaceted journey,” said Jaisey Yip, project lead and vice president of the cargo business division at Changi Airport Group – a strategic member of Pharma.Aero.

“Beyond the life science industry, the Lane Sustainability Readiness Index is cross-sectoral and aims to provide value to all stakeholders within the air cargo value chain.”

Pharma.Aero also acknowledged that sustainability is a rapidly evolving concept and remains committed to updating the index to meet the industry’s evolving needs.

The project also outlines potential spin-off projects aimed at achieving sustainable air pharma logistics, including developing a centralised digital platform and expanding beyond airport-to-airport scope.
