Awery: Shift to online spot bookings here to stay

Air cargo software firm Awery believes the growth in online spot bookings fuelled by the Covid pandemic is a trend that is here to stay.

Speaking at this week’s CNS Partnership Conference, Awery chief executive Vitaly Smilianets said that a side effect of the Covid pandemic was a “fundamental shift away from long term contracted rates over to spot booking as capacity shrunk and demand increased”.

“At the same time, the uptake of digitisation by airlines introduced huge efficiencies making pricing quicker and more responsive,” he added.

Smilianets believed that even as passenger flights restart – and therefore bellyhold capacity is added to the market – and recent freighter investments enter the market, airlines will continue to push online spot bookings.

“The change began because of Covid, but the change is here to stay because of tech,” said Smilianets.

“The airlines have done a fantastic job in adapting to new processes, embracing digitisation to adapt to the changing business landscape.

“By adopting digitisation, the industry is building business resilience and future proofing against the next challenge.”

Over the last six months, Awery has reported 400% increase in transactions on CargoBooking, its booking and quoting platform, and eMagic, which converts emails into different formats and languages.

The company said that over that time period the two software platforms have been processing more than 4,000 transactions per month.
