Air Cargo Forum: Shippers and airlines pledge to raise air cargo’s game

The Global Shippers Forum (GSF) signed a memorandum of understanding with IATA interest group Cargo iQ to improve quality in the industry at TIACA’s Air Cargo Forum in Paris.
The two partners pledged to implement the Cargo iQ quality management system and promote sustainability in airfreight.
The MoU outlines six areas where the two groups will work together towards a more efficient, quality-driven, and secure air cargo supply chain, and explores methods for industry and shippers to better communicate to better meet customer needs.
GSF secretary-general, Chris Welsh said: “Against the backdrop of weak growth in international trade, shippers are looking for even greater value from the air cargo industry. It needs to ensure that it is worth the premium service cost versus ocean, road, and rail.”
He predicted that the new cooperation with Cargo iQ will ensure that industry performance standards meet shippers’ needs, “and also help shippers understand the improvements the air cargo industry is making.”
Cargo iQ executive director, Ariaen Zimmerman, added that the airfreight industry “is facing continuous challenges to reinvent itself.”
He said that with continuous pressure on rates and emerging technologies creating ever more demand for real time information and shipment control, “industry participants need to make the right choices in developing future services and improving the current ones.
“The airfreight industry, being one of the biggest enablers for our modern, globalised economy, is a highly competitive environment.
"Knowing customers’ wants and needs is crucial. And only when shippers participate in avoiding costs and value its products, can the industry offer the services our world needs in an economically sustainable way.”
Under the agreement, GSF and Cargo iQ have agreed to: Promote acceptance, implementation and use of Cargo iQ standards and processes; share information and best practices for continuous improvement of the air cargo supply chain; identify and promote ways to make performance data more accessible to customers; and share details of forthcoming events where progress can be reviewed.
