ANA cancels A380 buy

ALL Nippon Airways (ANA) has cancelled its purchase of Airbus’ A380, according to The Daily Yomiuri.

ANA’s main rival, Japan Airlines has cut capital spending by JPY 100 billion (US$1.1 billion) from a planned JPY 419 billion in the three years to March 2011. With declining demand this allows ANA to likewise cut its own spending by JPY 100-200 billion from its planned JPY 900 billion in the four years to March 2012.

The cancellation will be a blow for Airbus, which had seen the purchase as its foot in the door to the Japanese market where it only holds four per cent of the market compared to 50 per cent for the rest of the world.
