Apple makes airfreight prices pear-shaped

ELECTRONICS and computer giant Apple’s move to ship massive quantities of its new iPad 3 media device on DHL freighters will eat up capacity on the courier’s international flights.

Because of the orders shipping rates have risen considerably this week. Apple news source MacRumors, which spoke with members of the shipping industry, has indicated that shipping rates rose as much as 20 per cent in one week as the manufacturer has taken up available capacity at premium rates.

The shipment is likely to dominate China-US routes, an insider says.
