Asia spiking or rising

A SURGE in traffic is creating a flurry of charters as forwarders scramble to secure lift on the long haul sectors, especially across the Pacific.
Airlines are reporting growth in traffic on several sectors. Volumes from Africa to Europe are up, and space from North to South America has tightened sharply as demand increased. The strongest growth, however, is reported out of Asia, with flows to the US leading the charge.
“Demand is fairly strong across the board but particularly so to North America, where the recovery started a few weeks earlier than for Europe,” reported Rupert Hogg, director and general manager of cargo at Cathay Pacific.
“Our flights are choc-a-bloc full,” said Neel Shah, vice-president of Delta Cargo, adding that the carrier has run 13 charters recently. In addition, Delta started a day one freighter frequency out of Shanghai on 19 October.
Bottlenecks are popping up over the Asia-Pacific region. “China is tight. Hong Kong is tight, but not as tight as China. Korea is beginning to build,” said Gary Schultheis, senior vice-president airfreight, the Americas at DHL Global Forwarding.
