Asian airfreight declines by 5.1 per cent

AIRFREIGHT markets remained depressed for Asian carriers in July.
International air cargo demand fell by 4.4 per cent during the first seven months of the year, reflecting continued weakness in key export markets, according to the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA).
“Airlines still face a very challenging operating environment, given the adverse impact of high oil prices, and the uncertain global economic outlook,” declares Andrew Herdman, AAPA’s director general.
In contrast, international air passenger traffic grew by 3.2 per cent.
The region’s airlines carry 18 million tonnes of cargo, representing two-fifths of global air cargo traffic.
