Bahrain destroys ‘explosive’ package

SECURITY forces were on high alert yesterday after it was reported that a package containing explosives was discovered and destroyed at Bahrain’s airport.
Bahrain’s interior ministry reported that explosives were discovered but later amended that, saying: “after examining [the] package at [the] lab it turns [out] the materials used aren’t explosives, but contained tools used to make explosives”.
The cargo was sent from the UK via Dubai (UAE).
The British embassy in the capital Manama was assumed to be the target of an explosion on 4 December caused by a bomb placed under a nearby vehicle.
Security has been boosted sharply across the kingdom during annual Shiite religious ceremonies.
Bahrain’s majority Shiites began an uprising in February seeking greater rights from the kingdom’s Sunni rulers.
