Brucargo starts tracking project

BRUSSELS Airport (Brucargo) is starting a 15-month general packet radio service (GPRS) project to track air cargo in real time.
The project will be led by the Flemish Institute for Logistics (VIL – Vlaams Instituut voor Logistiek) and will also involve partner companies, such as Aviapartner, Brussels Airlines, Centipharm, CEVA, DHL Global Forwarding, Flightcare and WFS.
“Our aim is not to monitor where things [go] wrong [for] legal discussions and claims, but to see where we can improve facilities, procedures or supporting equipment to guarantee the cool chain”, says Steven Polmans, head of cargo at Brussels Airport, “not only with having the necessary facilities in place, but also by ensuring the right procedures are there and followed by all partners involved.”
This will be the largest-scale project of its kind and the airport says it has already received requests from other airports and companies wishing to take part.
