Changing dynamics of pharma transportation

THE pharmaceutical industry is becoming increasingly diverse fuelled by ageing populations, emerging markets with their growing middle classes, along with innovative technological platforms.
It is estimated that by 2016 more than half of the top 50 best-selling drugs will require cold chain transportation, according to the Bio-pharma Cold Chain Sourcebook 2013.
So, those in the air cargo industry operating in the pharma and healthcare sector ignore the latest trends at their peril, warns Sebastiaan Scholte, chairman of the Cool Chain Association and chief executive of Jan de Rijk Logistics
At the start of the year, the airfreight road-feeder supplier entered the medical supplies home deliveries market by securing a deal with a Netherlands-based healthcare company.
The move will see Jan De Rijk transport vital medication for treating chronic and acute medical conditions, such as haemophilia.
Scholte believes delivering medicines to patients’ front doors (the so-called ‘final-mile’) will be among the emerging business opportunities in the billion-dollar sector.
