First 747-8 test freighter heads to Texas

IN May Boeing will send the first 747-8 freighter test aircraft to its global services and support site in San Antonio, Texas.

The manufacturer expects certification and first delivery to launch customer Cargolux in July.

Refurbishment of all five test aircraft is expected to take a year and will be performed by Boeing Defense Space and Security employees on contract to the Commercial Airplanes unit.

In March, Boeing began shipping early production 787-8s to the same facility for modifications to conform with certification production standards prior to delivery. The freighters will have test equipment removed and cargo loading equipment installed.
