Frankfurt to build new runway
19 / 01 / 2009
FRANKFURT’S international airport has received permission to build a fourth runway despite local protest. Expected opening is due in 2012 that will increase hourly movements from 80 to 120. However, Hesse’s Administrative Supreme Court, which gave the approval, has said that the planned night-flight quotas need to be more restrictive.
The regional government had promised locals a total ban on night flights but has reneged on that agreement, instead offering 17 night movements. Lufthansa, the airport’s main operator, wants its cargo division to have 41. The carrier has already moved much of its operations to Munich to cope with demand.
Fraport will begin work on the runway next month and also wants to open a third terminal.
