JOHN Gomes, the outgoing regional managing director Europe and Middle East of Toll Global Forwarding, has retired after a career spanning five decades.“I have witnessed dramatic changes in the industry in the 44 years I have worked in it – from being able to personally see a package loaded on an aircraft back in 1965, to the total security clampdown, which followed 9/11. Technology and IT are now driving this business – when I started work, the ‘ready reckoner’ was the forwarder’s main working tool,” said Gomes.Close friend and long-standing colleague, Eddie Stroud, said: “John and I have worked together for 42 years. His jovial character and infectious laughter will be greatly missed by us all, along with his wise words and vast experience, which have proven invaluable as the industry has evolved. We all thank John for his dedication to the business throughout the years, and we wish him a long and happy retirement.”
