Indian companies fined for uranium in bellyhold

THE US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has fined two Indian companies US$422,500 for illegally sending depleted uranium in the bellyhold of a passenger jet.
The forwarder Gallant Freight & Travels and the industrial construction company IIS & Allied Services are alleged to have sent the highly radioactive material on a British Airways (BA) flight from Mumbai to Boston’s Logan International Airport in 2008. The two companies neither declared the shipment nor properly packed and labelled it.
BA’s cargo handlers in Boston only discovered the nature of the shipment when its crate “failed”. Air Cargo News hopes it wasn’t after being dropped.
