Lufthansa Cargo continues growth

LUFTHANSA Cargo reported an increase in freight and an improved load factor for the year-to-date at the end of 2010’s third quarter. From January to September, the carrier transported about 1.3 million tonnes of freight, representing a year-on-year increase of 19.4 per cent. Measured by transported tonne-kilometres, sales rose 22.8 per cent. The load factor improved almost 10 points to 71.1 per cent.

“Lufthansa Cargo has so far made optimal use of the upswing this year,” said the current chief executive officer, Carsten Spohr. “We were able to realise the targeted expansion of our offer, bringing about a significant increase in the load factors, and we intend to keep growing during the fourth quarter.”

As of November, the carrier will be operating all 18 of its MD-11 freighters again after activating those that were parked in the Californian desert. Those freighters will be deployed on additional routes, providing services such as, from November, 12 weekly flights to Japan rather than the seven flights to date.
