Lufthansa names new chief

LUFTHANSA has appointed its deputy chairman, Christoph Franz (right), to be the successor to Wolfgang Mayrhuber as chairman and chief executive officer of the Lufthansa Group, effective 1 January 2011.

At the same time, Carsten Spohr, current head of Lufthansa Cargo, will become chief executive of Lufthansa Airlines. Although not yet confirmed, the board also proposed Karl Ulrich Garnadt, current head of hub management and passenger services, to be Spohr’s replacement at the cargo division.

“Our company is characterised by a responsible personnel and executive development guided by foresight and it is this very development that regularly assures us an outstanding management team,” said chairman Jürgen Weber.

Lufthansa Cargo moved 17.9 per cent more air cargo in August compared to last year, up to 155,000 metric tons, thanks to rebounding international freight demand and its consolidation with Austrian Airlines’ cargo unit.
