Malaysian cargo crime solved

A TWO-year-old theft from the Air Cargo Complex at Batu Maung in Malaysia has finally been solved.

Local police revealed that they arrested eight men for the theft of US$13.4 million of Intel microchips but did not have enough evidence to charge them. Instead they used an emergency ordinance to detain them for two years in Simpang Rengam as a ‘preventive measure’.

Penang Deputy Chief Police Officer, Datuk Salleh Mat Rasid, said that while the case had been solved it was not announced to the public. “We will increase cooperation with the industrial sector to ensure that such incidents to not recur,” he said.

On November 20, 2006, 20 men attacked and beat 17 personnel of the air cargo complex and fled with the microchips in two container trucks.
