Sheikh denies job layoffs and merger

EMIRATES has denied both the threat of job lay-offs and also a merger with Etihad.

Speaking at the launch of Emirates’ new direct flight to San Francisco, CEO Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum told reporters that the airline will receive 22 new aircraft as part of its expansion plans, plans which will require enough staff to run the services. “Our intention is Emirates expansion so no lay offs are anticipated in the near future,” he said.

Speaking of the rumoured merger with Eithad, he said: “The current global crisis has led to speculations by experts analysing the markets in the manner they like. Both Etihad and Emirates are part of one family being UAE’s national carriers, but nothing on the proposed merger is true.

“Since Emirates enjoys a robust growth projection for next year as well, we really see no need for mergers or alliance with other international carriers at this point of time,” he said.
