Southern expands with extra 777Fs

SOUTHERN Air has added two more 777 freighters to fleet. The carrier will take delivery of its fourth on 25 April.

So far, this makes the company the only aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance operator to fly the 777F.

DHL Express will wet lease the new aircraft for its new round-the-world service from Hong Kong (China) to Los Angeles (US), then on to Leipzig (Germany) and back to Hong Kong.

Southern Air’s first two 777Fs have flown the Cincinnati (US)-Bahrain-Hong Kong routes for DHL since September last year.

In other news, Lieutenant General Vern ‘Rusty’ Findley joins Southern Air as a military and government business development board advisor.

Before retiring in December 2011, he was vice-commander, air mobility command, responsible for the bulk of the US Air Force’s strategic transportation of assets.

Findley says: “Southern Air is a first-rate organisation. I have been very impressed by what the company has accomplished over the last two years under Dan McHugh’s leadership, and I am eager to help it achieve its long-term objectives.”
