UPS embraces new 747-400

UPS has officially welcomed the first Boeing 747-400 freighter into its European air fleet at a ceremony in Cologne/Bonn, Germany.

UPS will fly the jumbo freighter from Cologne to Hong Kong and back five days a week with a payload of up to 120 tonnes.

“This new aircraft replaces an MD-11 freighter in our network,” said Wolfgang Flick, president, UPS Europe. “Our double-digit export volume growth from Europe is dictating that we fly more planes like this one – big aircraft, that can carry a lot of goods a long way.”

The 400 series 747 includes: self-diagnostic systems, survelliance technology to spot other planes and electronic charts and manuals for the pilots.
