Volga-Dnepr aids Fukushima cooling effort

THE operation to cool reactors at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan is gaining pace following Volga Dnepr Airlines’ delivery of a pump on 31 March.
The 60 tons of equipment, transported from Germany to Japan, included a truck-mounted pump, which has a 62-metre boom, enabling it to discharge water over the edge of the reactor buildings and into the buildings from above. The pumps may also be used for any necessary concreting work.
The equipment on board the An-124-100 freighter arrived at Narita Airport and was transferred to the Tokyo Electric Power Company, which operates the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
In the next few days, Volga-Dnepr Airlines will deliver three more pumps to Fukushima from Stuttgart, Atlanta and Los Angeles using An-124 Ruslan freighters.
