Yusen to appeal cartel fine

YUSEN Logistics will appeal against a lawsuit brought by the Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) concerning its alleged airfreight price-fixing activities.

The US$21.6 million fine was imposed in March 2009, as the company was suspected of adding fuel surcharges and airport security charges to its services.

The company was among 12 forwarders ordered by the commission to pay a total of $113.2 million in fines.

Yusen said it was “unable to accept the correctness” of this judgement and said it had resolved to commence a lawsuit in the Tokyo High Court, seeking to have the decision overturned.

Other companies charged include: DHL Global Forwarding Japan, Hanshin Air Cargo, MOL Logistics (Japan), Nippon Express and United Aircargo Consolidators.
