Velana International Airport (VIA), the Maldives’ primary international gateway, has recorded its highest-ever cargo performance in 2025, underscoring its rapid growth as a regional cargo hub.

From January to September 2025, VIA handled 54,549 tonnes of cargo, representing a 12% year-on-year increase compared to the same period in 2024. Transhipment cargo reached 12,002 tonnes, comprising 9,852 tonnes of Air-to-Air and 2,150 tonnes of Sea-to-Air shipments.

Supporting this upward momentum, the airport also facilitated 298 dedicated freighter Air Traffic Movements (ATMs) during the first three quarters of 2025. This reflects VIA’s ability to manage increasingly complex and high-volume cargo operations with speed, precision, and reliability.

July 2025 – A Month of Milestones

In August alone, VIA achieved its highest-ever monthly transhipment volume, processing 1,934 tonnes of cargo in just 31 days.

Further strengthening its operational record, on 13 August 2025, VIA welcomed a Qatar Airways Cargo Boeing 777F freighter from Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) carrying 55 tonnes of cargo.

This was the second widebody freighter operation of 2025, showcasing VIA’s readiness to accommodate large-scale cargo movements. The freighter’s swift turnaround at the Velana Cargo Terminal demonstrated the airport’s advanced handling capabilities, from specialised equipment to expertly trained teams.

“Our growth is the result of focused investment in infrastructure, process innovation, and deepening partnerships with global carriers,” said Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, managing director and chief executive. “Every milestone we achieve reinforces VIA’s mission to connect the Maldives to the world with speed, reliability, and service excellence.”

Network Expansion: New Afcom Freighter Service to Bengaluru

As part of its ongoing network growth, VIA has introduced a new dedicated freighter service to Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (BLR), operated by Afcom. This route is a significant addition to VIA’s cargo portfolio, enhancing South Asia’s connectivity with global markets.

Afcom already operates weekly freighter services between Chennai (MAA) and Malé. These operations have been instrumental in enabling exporters in the Southeast Asia region to efficiently access Middle Eastern and European markets, using Velana International Airport (MLE) as a strategic transhipment hub.

The newly launched Bengaluru route further elevates VIA’s role as a transhipment hub, providing faster and more efficient connections for cargo moving between India and VIA’s extensive global network

“This collaboration between VIA and Afcom marks another step forward in our effort to strengthen freighter connectivity,” said Hussain Shafiu, Manager, Cargo Development. “By adding Bengaluru to our network, we’re creating more value for our customers and reinforcing the Maldives’ position as an efficient, reliable, and strategic cargo hub for the region.”

Commitment to Excellence

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), the operator of Velana International Airport, remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety, security, and service excellence during this period of rapid growth.

“As the Maldives’ main aviation gateway, VIA’s role goes beyond handling passenger traffic,” added Mohamed Mihad, Chief Commercial Officer. “VIA is well-connected as we have flights flying from more than 30 global cities. Our aim is to leverage this connectivity to make the Maldives one of the most efficient and connected cargo hubs in the region.”

With record-breaking volumes, expanded connectivity, and a forward-looking investment strategy, VIA is set to further strengthen its standing as a trusted partner for trade, business, and connectivity in the years ahead.
