Robert van de Weg has been appointed as the new chief executive of Mexico-based freighter carrier mas Air Cargo.
Van de Weg joins the airline from ECS Group where he had been working as chief commercial officer over the past five years.
He is well known in the industry having worked for a variety of cargo businesses since he joined air cargo in the early 1990s.
According to his LinkedIn profile, van de Weg started his air cargo career at KLM Cargo before going on to have roles at Atlas Air, Cargolux, AirBridgeCargo, AirWayCargo, CargoLogicManagment and ECS.
He also served on the board of directors for Champ CargoSystems.
Van de Weg takes over from Andrés Fabre, who assumes the role of executive chairman of the board of directors. Luis Sierra, who served as chairman of the board, remains a shareholder and member of the mas board.
”Over the past 18 months, Andrés Fabre has led the transformation and strengthening of mas, preparing it for sustained growth in 2025 and beyond,” said mas in a press release. “His vision and leadership have been key to consolidating the company and in his new role he will continue to support the transition and development of the company.”
Fabre added: “Robert has the ideal profile to lead the future of mas. His experience in managing cargo airlines and international operations will be key for this new stage. I am sure that he will take mas even further, and from my role as Executive President, I will be supporting him in this process.”
Van De Weg joins the airline as it is in the process of expanding its fleet. According to fleet tracking website PlaneSpotters, the airline recently took delivery of an Airbus A330-300 freighter and another is due to join.
“Andrés has left a solid foundation for the growth of mas, and I am ready to continue with that work," said van de Weg. "The airline is at a very important stage, and I am excited to collaborate with the team to strengthen our operations and expand our presence.”
Including its recent delivery, the airline operates a fleet of three freighters, two Airbus A330-200Fs and the single A330-300F that was recently delivered.
Back in 2022, the airline had even more ambitious plans and was hoping to grow its fleet to nine freighters by the end of that year and hoped to eventually reach a fleet of 18 cargo aircraft.
The airline was once part of the LATAM Group but the company sold its stake in 2018. Discovery Americas is the majority shareholder of mas.
