Chapman Freeborn has coordinated an outsize cargo shipment operation that has set a new handling record at Glasgow Prestwick Airport (PIK) in Scotland.

The air charter specialist organised a cargo charter flight that transported the longest piece of cargo that PIK has ever handled.

The shipment included a 67 ft long, 24-tonne component, transported on three 20 ft connecting pallets, along with two additional 40 ft components.

Designed for the oil and gas industry, these outsized components were transported aboard a Boeing 747 nose-loading freighter.

Originating from Kuala Lumpur Airport (KUL), Malaysia, the shipment arrived at PIK following a stopover at Liège Airport (LGG), where it underwent a security screening.

At PIK, the cargo was unloaded in 30 minutes using three maindeck loaders and two cranes.

“This operation required close coordination between our UK team and the airline, working alongside the CAA to ensure the cargo arrived on schedule,” said Adam Duckworth, cargo charter broker at Chapman Freeborn, part of ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) provider Avia Solutions Group.

He added: “The handling agent’s team, Prestwick Cargo Services, did an exceptional job coordinating the offloading operation. We’re proud to have transported Prestwick’s longest piece of cargo to date, and remain dedicated to supporting our clients and the industries they serve, regardless of shipment size or complexity.”

In recent years Chapman Freeborn has diversified its business with e-commerce and is now focusing on expanding its niche products.
