DHL Express has restarted the shipment of high-value parcels to the US after the country restarted the expedited clearance of packages worth more than $800.

The express firm suspended the transport of parcels worth more than $800 on 21 April after new US customs regulations were introduced that reduced the threshold for a formal import procedure from $2,500 to $800.

This meant that packages worth more than $800 needed to be customs cleared, creating a “significant increase” in clearance and workload.

However, from today, the US will allow shipments valued between $800 and $2,500 to once again be cleared using the expedited informal entry process.

Following the move, DHL Express restarted shipments of parcels worth more than $800 to the country.

However, DHL warned that there could still be transit delays as it navigates the reintroduction of the service and works to clear the current backlog.

"DHL has been actively working to enhance its clearance capabilities and capacity to ensure the continued delivery of reliable service.

"The express industry also had a constructive dialogue with US Customs and Border Protection, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Commerce, to optimise customs regulations to ensure critical goods still reach US businesses and consumers in a timely, safe and compliant manner.

"Adjustments to US customs regulations will allow DHL to resume accepting B2C shipments with a declared value exceeding $800 into the US.”

The company added: "DHL values this positive development and the support of the federal government in making these changes. Our focus remains on effectively supporting our customers and facilitating international trade.

”We recognise the importance of collaboration between the private and public sectors in addressing both security and economic considerations.”
