Maersk will strengthen its air leadership team this month with the appointment of Christoph Hemmann as head of global air and LCL, and John McDonald as head of Maersk Air Freight Forwarding (MAFF).

Hemmann will be taking over from Murali Rajamani, who has already transferred to another position within Maersk. He will report to Narin Phol, executive vice president and chief product officer (CPO) for logistics and services at Maersk.

Hemmann has over 15 years of experience in the airfreight industry. Before joining Maersk, he held key leadership positions at DHL Global Forwarding and DB Schenker, where he successfully led teams in Europe, the Americas as well as Asia Pacific.

The appointment of Hemmann also marks a change in reporting structure for the shipping giant's cargo airline,  Maersk Air Cargo.

The global head of Maersk Air Cargo, Lars Jordahn, will now report into Hemmann, rather than group chief operating officer Rabab Boulos.

Maersk Air Cargo has a fleet of 18 Boeing 767 freighters and two new Boeing 777Fs.

Meanwhile, McDonald takes over from John Wetherell, who has left Maersk. He brings over 35 years of logistics and airfreight experience to Maersk. Most recently, he was the executive vice president & head of airfreight for Americas at DB Schenker.

Prior to that, he held several leadership roles in the air business at companies like STG Logistics, UTi Worldwide and CEVA Logistics.

“Christoph and John both possess extensive leadership experience in the Global Air Freight business and have led global teams to success with their previous companies. We are excited to get their deep industry expertise, enhancing our Air business and adding further commercial value to our customers," said Phol.
