DB Schenker joins Africa alliance as it looks to future growth

DB Schenker has joined the “Pan-African Mobility Alliance” as it looks to cement its commitment to the continent.

The forwarder said joining the alliance, which covers business, science and politics, and was initiated by the German government to promote the continent’s economy, was its first step as it looks to strengthen its activities in Africa.

“This underlines the importance Africa has for us,” explained Jochen Thewes, chief executive of DB Schenker. “Economic output in Africa has grown enormously in some cases. We see a great potential in the continent and are anticipating a considerable demand for logistics. Today, with a population of 1.3 billion people in 54 countries, Africa is one of the regions with the fastest economic growth in the world.”

The alliance was established with several goals, including maximising logistical potential and infrastructure, particularly in the automotive industry.

“Our customers are currently expanding their business in several African countries. As a global logistics provider, we create the necessary conditions on site to handle their supply chains smoothly. The initiatives of the Pan-African Mobility Alliance will support and improve this development”, explained Thomas Ruelke, chief commercial officer of DB Schenker Middle East and Africa, responsible for the growth of DB Schenker in this region.

DB Schenker expects the greatest economic development to come primarily from East and West Africa. Egypt and South Africa, where the company has been active for many years, will continue to play an important role in future development, it added.
