DHL Express to expand at CVG Airport

DHL Express is to invest $192m at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky (CVG) International Airport in the US as it expands its existing operations there.
The investment will include a new 305,200 sq ft aircraft maintenance facility on a 50-acre site next to DHL’s current CVG hub, as well as the addition of eight new aircraft gates at its current ramp to support the company’s operations and to allow its existing aviation and line maintenance space in Building 3 to be repurposed.
The airport is at the heart of DHL’s US network; it hosts 130 daily DHL flights and is home to a 60-strong fleet of DHL aircraft.
“Our Americas hub at CVG is one of three DHL global superhubs [the other two being located in Hong Kong and Germany] and completes the backbone of our intercontinental network,” said Mike Parra, chief executive for DHL Express, Americas region.
At CVG, DHL handles shipments bound for the US, Canada, Mexico and Latin America, and processes approximately 50m international shipments annually.
“Kentucky has one of the strongest distribution and logistics sectors in the country, and DHL plays a major role in that success,” said Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear.
Candace McGraw, chief executive at CVG Airport, added: “DHL’s global superhub is an integral part of our regional and state economy. Its success is contingent on having the facilities and workforce able to serve the global air cargo industry, and this development aligns with our vision to expand aircraft maintenance and support services on campus.”
BE NKY Growth Partnership chief executive Lee Crume said that aviation maintenance and logistics management are top growth sectors in Northern Kentucky.
He added: “With ever-increasing cargo loads arriving at CVG, the need for additional maintenance and repair operations continues to grow.”
To encourage investment and job growth in the community, the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority (KEDFA) in July approved DHL Express for up to $1m in tax incentives through the Kentucky Enterprise Initiative Act, which allows approved companies to recoup Kentucky sales and use tax on construction costs, building fixtures, equipment used in research and development and electronic processing.
