Swiss join the drone club

Swiss Post and Swiss WorldCargo have launched a project to test the commercial possibilities of logistics drone in partnership with California-based manufacturer, Matternet.
They will carry out drone tests in July 2015, but admit that “the widespread use of drones is not expected within the next five years.”
Before then, issues including the regulatory framework and restrictions on battery life will need to be resolved.

The tests will focus primarily on their use in exceptional cases or the transport of special items. Other possible areas include delivery to peripheral areas or express delivery.
Possible uses could include supplying areas that have been cut off by natural disasters or transport of laboratory test material.
The partners will test several versions of the Matternet ONE drone, which has been designed for small deliveries of up to a kilo over 10km and it is said to be extremely simple to operate.
