Liege reports its best ever month for cargo

Belgian hub Liege has reported its best ever month for cargo in October as volumes reached 84,000 tonnes.

The airport said that it had achieved the record despite the current “challenging times”.

Meanwhile, it exceeded its total volumes for the year (up to today) have reached 730,000 tonnes, up by 3%.

“Besides being the highest monthly volume October 2019 also showed the highest import volume ever, making up 51% of the volume,” the airport said.

“On a European level the freight market has been falling for 10 months in a row, however Liege Airport heads out of the water with a year-to-date growth of 3%.”

The airport has positioned itself as a freighter specialist over recent years, offering an alternative to the congested main European gateways while also catering for e-commerce growth.

It has seen a spate of airlines transfer their cargo services to the hub, while Alibaba’s logistics arm Cainiao has chosen Liege as one of its five global logistics hubs. FedEx also uses it as one of its main European gateways following the takeover of TNT.
