PICTURE SPECIAL: Cargolux celebrates 50th anniversary

All-cargo carrier Cargolux is celebrating 50 years of operations which, since its establishment in 1970 (see images below), have seen it expand to become one of the leading freight-only operators in Europe and seventh on IATA’s global ranking based on international scheduled FTKs.

In a statement, the airline explained: “Exactly half a century ago, Luxembourg’s national carrier Luxair, Iceland’s national carrier Loftleiðir, the Swedish shipping company Salén and some private investors, founded Cargolux.

“Since its inception, Cargolux has lived up to its now famous slogan ‘You name it, we fly it’ – the embodiment of the Cargolux spirit.”

Noting that it was the first airline to fly the 747-400F and 747-8F, Cargolux dubs itself as an industry pioneer.

“In addition to setting high standards in the industry, the airline has also contributed to the diversification of Luxembourg’s economy,” the carrier said in a reflective statement.

To mark its 50th anniversary, Cargolux branded its LX-VCC 747-8 freighter (pictured above) with anniversary livery and a the words ‘Spirit of Cargolux’. Other aircraft in Cargolux’s fleet also received commemorative emblems to highlight the milestone.

Richard Forson, president and chief executive of Cargolux, commented: “It is a remarkable achievement for an all-cargo operator to celebrate 50 years in existence and I think I speak on behalf of the whole company when I say we are proud of how far our airline has come.

“We have weathered many storms over the years and this celebration shows the world how committed and dedicated our employees are.

“In addition, I would also like to thank all of our customers and business partners in helping us get to commemorating this memorable occasion.”

Cargolux also set up a retrospective website to commemorate its journey and evolution.
