SIA Cargo notes reliance on cargo-only PAX flights for performance in May

Singapore-based SIA Cargo has reported in its results for May 2020 that cargo load factor (CLF) was 14.4 percentage points higher than last year, due to the capacity decline (61.9%) outpacing the decline (of 52.8%) in cargo traffic measured in freight tonne km.
“Capacity contraction would have been much greater, save for the deployment of passenger aircraft on cargo-only flights,” the carrier explained in a statement.
All regions reported increases in load factor: East Asia by 24.7 percentage points; Americas by 14.5 percentage points; Europe by 5.6 percentage points; Asia Pacific by 11.6 percentage points; West Asia and Africa by 19.9 percentage points.
In May 2020, the SIA Group’s airlines (comprising Singapore Airlines, SilkAir and low-budget carrier Scoot) recorded a 99.6% year-on-year decline in passenger demand as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Overall, in response to the virus outbreak, the group cut passenger capacity (measured in available seat kms) by 96.2%.
