Lucky for some: Lufthansa Cargo adds another B777F

Lufthansa Cargo has taken delivery of its second Boeing 777 freighter in as many months – giving it access to 13 of the aircraft – as it continues to push on with its cargo fleet renewal programme.

The freighter operator took delivery of the B777F on September 29 when the aircraft (D-ALFI) landed at Frankfurt from Everett Airport in Washington State.

The aircraft takes the name Buenos días México that was previously used by D-ALCH that was previously taken out of service. In August, it took delivery of another B777F.

Lufthansa Cargo now operates nine B777Fs at its home hub in Frankfurt. In addition, the company markets the cargo capacity of four more aircraft of this type, which are operated by the AeroLogic joint venture based at Leipzig Airport.

Lufthansa Cargo chief executive Peter Gerber said: “Especially in acute crises, air cargo secures important supply routes and thus makes a fundamental contribution to the global economy. Mastering short-term global challenges is one of our core competencies, countering long-term global challenges is our responsibility. With our new fleet we are underlining our claim to actively and sustainably combine economic and ecological efficiency.” 

The carrier again pointed out that the B777F is around 20% more efficient and emits less carbon dioxide than the preceding MD-11Fs.

Lufthansa Cargo had been planning to phase out its MD-11F fleet this year but put its plans on hold in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

It now plans to phase out its six remaining MD-11 freighters “over the coming months, with the first half to be phased out within this year”.
