Quito Airport starts construction of import cargo facility

Quito International Airport has started building a new $2m import cargo distribution area, expected to be completed in mid-2021.
The facility will feature automated solutions designed to enhance the airport’s cargo handling capabilities, efficiency, traceability and security.
Sandro Ruiz, general manager of the Metropolitan Public Company of Airport Services (EPMSA); Xavier Garay, district director of the Ecuadorian customs in Quito; Andrew O’Brian, president and chief executive of Corporación Quiport; and Santiago Gómez de la Torre, general manager of Tabacarcen, were present when the first brick was laid at the construction site.
O’Brian commented: “While everyone is reducing budgets and investments and postponing projects, today Tabacarcen is investing in this plan, betting on Ecuador, betting on the airport and betting on the future. This is a project that will create jobs and opportunities. These are the signs that Quito and Ecuador need.”
Gómez de la Torre added: “This is an emblematic project for Tabacarcen, for the Quito airport and for the country, because we are going to have the most modern import air cargo terminal on the continent and the only one to have an automated system.”
Last month, Quito Airport saw its export cargo volumes pick up over recent months following the resumption of services at the hub.
The hub said that connectivity from the airport has been increasing steadily since the resumption of commercial passenger operations on June 1, both in national and international services.
