Growth in freighter services boosts cargo volumes at Brussels Airport

Brussels Airport has reported an increase in cargo volumes for the fourth consecutive month.

Volumes from January to September this year were 0.6% higher than in the same period in 2019.

Meanwhile, in September 2020, the hub experienced an 18.9% year-on-year increase air cargo demand.

Brussels Airport said that growth in all-cargo and express services balanced out the effect of passenger flights being grounded due to the pandemic.

“Express services maintained growth compared with last year (+33.8%), while the increase in volumes in the cargo sector (+88.8%) accelerated growth in airfreight volumes,” the hub said.

Also in September 2020, there was a 40% year-on-year increase in the number of freighter flights operated at the hub.

During the first nine months of this year, the hub reported a 28% year-on-year increase in number of freighter flights.

Brussels Airport said the number of cargo-only passenger flights (preighters) “remains constant”.

It added: “Imports and exports are on the rise. As far as imports are concerned, traffic from Africa is doing particularly well. On the export side, Asia is highly valued”.

Last week, Brussels Airport and Air Cargo Belgium created a taskforce to help it prepare for the launch of a Covid-19 vaccine.

The Taskforce, BRUcure, is mapping out all scenarios for the various types of vaccines in close consultation with the pharmaceutical companies that Brussels Airport works with.
