AirBridgeCargo transports vaccine manufacturing equipment

AirBridgeCargo Airlines (ABC) has transported vaccine manufacturing equipment to US as part of a Covid-19 production project.

The carrier said that a total of 840 tonnes of equipment for automation lines for the manufacturing of coated cyclo olefin (COP) polymer vaccine containers will be transported this year from Frankfurt to Atlanta onboard Boeing 747-8F  aircraft.

The project will allow the manufacturer to ramp up capacity to 600,000 vials per day. The first flight took place in August.

Yulia Celetaria, global pharma director, AirBridgeCargo Airlines, said: “We have already witnessed an emerging demand for Covid-19 vaccine-related shipments, covering vials, ampules, injectors, as well as production equipment.

“It is amazing to realise that the equipment we transport today will facilitate the production of more secure plastic vials made of COP which we might be delivering later with Covid-19 vaccines inside, once the Phase 3 trials are finalised.”

ABC said that  is expected that more than 50% of Covid-19 vaccines will be transported by air, with the major manufacturing regions being located in India, China, UK, US and Europe.

The project was conducted in co-operation with forwarder Streck Transportges and engineering firm Zahoransky.
