Leipzig/Halle Airport notes record cargo growth in October

Leipzig Halle Airport

Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ) has set a new cargo growth record for itself in October.

Airfreight volumes last month increased 10.9% year on year to 124,881 tonnes. Year to date, demand increased by 8.4% to just over 1.1m tonnes.

In addition, the number of cargo flights in October increased by 8.7% year on year to 4,501.

The hub said factors that are expected to positively impact its cargo operations in the future include:

  • Amazon Air opening its first regional air cargo centre in Europe at LEJ at the beginning of November;
  • DHL operating its largest hub at LEJ;
  • AeroLogic, a joint venture involving DHL Express and Lufthansa Cargo, also being based at LEJ;
  • LEJ’s location, which enables it to be accessed by multiple modes of transport.

Additionally, LEJ highlighted its prepared to handle vaccines ahead of widespread global distribution of the Covid-19 vaccine.

“LEJ offers its customers CEIV Pharma certification,” the hub said. “The airport is able to handle temperature- and time-critical pharmaceutical shipments like vaccines round the clock.

“PortGround is responsible for this. It is a subsidiary of Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG and specialises in handling aircraft and cargo.

“The airport’s refrigerated warehouse is located in the World Cargo Center. It has direct access to the apron area. This guarantees short transport routes and stable refrigerated chains to and from aircraft and trucks.”
