MIC Cargo has opened a new air cargo import facility close to Chicago O’Hare Airport as demand to the US airport surges.

The cargo handler’s chief executive Edip Pektas said that it decided to open the new building to “alleviate the congestion at our on-airport facility”

“Our goal was to alleviate the congestion at our on-airport facility because our stakeholders – airline customers and the truckers, forwarders and customs brokers who represent the shippers – deserve a quality service at a time when supply chains worldwide are strained to the point of breaking,” he said.

“The cargo growth at O’Hare required us to take action. Our solution is two-fold; a larger footprint and a dedicated team of supervisors, managers and employees working tirelessly for our customers.”

Over the first six months of the year, the airport has handled 1.3m tonnes of cargo, an increase of 46.8% compared with last year and 48% up on 2019 levels.

The building is located around three miles from the airport and measures 164,000 sq ft and offers sixteen dock doors and two ramps. The facility is open around the clock and uses CargoSprint’s SprintPass allowing truckers to make a reservation to pick up cargo.

“Air cargo arriving at O’Hare, either from an international passenger flight at Terminal 5 or a freighter arriving at our on-airport apron, is immediately transferred by rollerbed truck to [the new facility],” said MIC Cargo chief operating officer Rafal Rapacz. “We have made it our goal to have import cargo available eight to ten hours after a flight arrives.”
