Challenge Group takes aim at sustainability following TIACA membership

The Challenge Group is ramping up its focus on sustainability following its decision to last year join air cargo association TIACA.

The group, which includes CAL Cargo Airlines and Challenge Airlines BE, said that it had participated in the association’s sustainability working group and that it is now working on its own sustainability strategy.

It would utilise the substantial guidelines that TIACA had recently developed to create the strategy.

In November, TIACA published the industry’s first air cargo sustainability roadmap.

The publication is designed to support the air cargo industry through a period of transformation.

The roadmap examines the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and maps how air cargo contributes to their attainment.

It provides practical guidance in the form of 30 actionable priorities addressing 8 key areas:

  1.  Decarbonisation
  2.  Elimination of waste
  3.  Protecting biodiversity
  4.  Supporting local economies and communities
  5.  Improving lives and well-being
  6.  Improving efficiencies and profitability
  7.  Attracting, retaining, and developing employees
  8.  Building and nurturing partnerships

The group is also looking to take an active role in the organisation and feels its multimodal services – it also offers cargo handling and a road feeder operation – are a good match with TIACA’s cross-industry membership.

“We joined as a non-voting member in October 2021,” said Yossi Shoukroun, chief executive of Challenge Group, “because we are keen to contribute proactively and tangibly to the future of our industry.

“There is strength in numbers, and it is this strength that will drive change. Together with other supply chain stakeholders, we can make significant progress on the many changes that are necessary for a cleaner, more efficient, and collaborative air cargo industry.”

Glyn Hughes, director general of TIACA, stated: “It is with great pleasure that we welcome the Challenge Group to the TIACA membership family. They have a wonderful vision for sustainable growth and transformation, and we are excited about supporting the Group in their journey.”
