German logistics systems supplier Lödige Industries is to deliver an automated air cargo handling system for the new Cainiao Smart Gateway.

What will be the third-largest logistics centre in Hong Kong is scheduled to open in the third quarter of this year, and the Lödige handling system will handle acceptance, delivery, storage, retrieval, transhipment and sorting of air cargo through the facility.

Formed in 2013, Cainiao is the logistics arm of the Chinese technology giant Alibaba Group, which specialises in a number of markets including e-commerce.

Joining Cainiao’s regional eHubs to form a “smart logistics network, this up-and-coming strategically located facility in Hong Kong will make an important contribution to further improve global reach and increase delivery speed”, a statement from Lödige opined.

Cainiao Smart Gateway will provide warehousing and distribution services within the environment of Alibaba’s electronic World Trade Platform (eWTP), which was set up to lower trade barriers and provide more equitable access through global trade facilitation for businesses and consumers around the world.

Nicholas Tripptree, managing director for Lödige Industries in Asia Pacific, remarked: “The pandemic has enhanced dynamism in the e-commerce landscape across countries and long-standing consumer behaviours have been forever changed.

“The logistics centres and warehouses are becoming engines of the supply chain.

“Therefore, we understand the unique pressures e-commerce operations face and we are very pleased that we can support in achieving its goals with automation solutions from Lödige Industries to ensure processes are streamlined while productivity and efficiency remain high.”
