Frankfurt finally reports cargo increase… thanks to a difficult July 2022

Europe’s busiest cargo airport Frankfurt has reported its first year-on-year increase in cargo volumes in 19 months.

The German hub in July registered a 2.3% increase in cargo volumes compared with a year earlier as volumes reached 164,503 tonnes.

This is the first time Frankfurt has registered an increase in its monthly cargo volumes since December 2021.

However, the increase is largely down to a difficult comparison period a year ago.

During July last year, the airport was hit by a series of passenger and freighter flight cancellations due to staff shortages and rapidly increasing demand following the pandemic.

Lufthansa Cargo re-routed some of its flights to Munich and placed an embargo on certain cargo types.

The situation started to ease towards the end of the month.

Volumes at the airport also continue to lag behind pre-Covid 2019 levels – in July 2019 Frankfurt handled 178,652 tonnes.

And over the first seven months of the year, cargo volumes are down 8.4% year on year at 1.1m tonnes.
