Half year declines for Europe’s top three cargo hubs

Europe’s top three cargo hubs – Frankfurt, Paris and Amsterdam – all registered tonnage volume declines in the first six months of 2015.
Data collated from the airports or government statistical offices show that Frankfurt – the top European air cargo hub in 2014 with 2.16m tonnes, saw a 2.1% decline for the half year to just over 1m tonnes.
Paris CDG, the second placed European airfreight hub last year at just over 2m tonnes, is down by 4.3% for the six months to June, at 992,600 tonnes. Third placed Amsterdam Schiphol, 1.6m tonnes in 2014, saw a 2.1% fall for the half year 2015 to 784,600 tonnes.
Only London’s Heathrow airport, fourth in 2014 with 1.5m tonnes, registered a positive half year, with a 2.1% increase to 742,000 tonnes.
However, all four top European hubs registered a cargo volume decline in June.

As the cargo statistics for July start to emerge, European hubs have seen a mixed set of results, with Frankfurt registering a two percent drop in July to 177,840 tonnes, while Heathrow fell 5.4% year on year to 121,240 tonnes in July.
London Stansted, boosted by a surge in charters, recorded a 4.4% increase in July to 20,732 tonnes
