Airfreight fails to hit the heights

International air freight fell during the second quarter in the US and remained below its pre-crisis peak in the EU, according to the latest update of global freight data collected by the International Transport Forum at the OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development at the United Nations).
However, exports to the ‘BRICs’ countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) and “remain locomotives of growth,” it added. Surface freight volumes do though show signs of a slowing down in China and Russia.
OECD said that air freight, considered an economic lead, fell in the second quarter of 2015 in the US after growing above the pre-crisis level between 2014 and 2015 for the first time since 2012. In the 28 EU countries, air freight volumes remain below the pre-crisis peak, according to preliminary seasonally adjusted data.
While total external trade by sea in the EU area grew above the pre-crisis levels for the first time since June 2008, the latest data show a decline back to pre-crisis levels.
