Hong Kong airport sees cargo growth in October

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) saw cargo growth for the second consecutive month in October, increasing by 2% over like period 2014 to 392,000 tonnes.
Hong Kong, the world’s number one cargo airport by volumes in 2014 at 4.4m tonnes, had recorded a decrease in freight throughputs in six of the first ten months of this year.
The increase in cargo during October was mainly driven by imports, which were up 4% from a year ago, said HKIA, adding: “Exports and transhipments grew 1% and 2%, respectively, compared to the same month last year.”
Among the key trading regions, traffic to/from Europe, Australasia and North America “increased most significantly”.
Since the beginning of the year, HKIA has handled 3.58m tonnes of cargo, marking a year-on-year increase of 0.4%.
Vivian Cheung, deputy director, airport operations of Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) said that the company has launched a series called ‘Airport Heroes’ on social media platforms, which introduces airport staff working in various roles.
“Through this series, we hope to give the public a better understanding of the diverse range of people working at HKIA, and how the airport could not have reached its current level of success without their effort and dedication," added Cheung.
