Rhenus consolidates airfreight operations through Frankfurt

Supply chain operator Rhenus is consolidating its European airfreight volumes at Frankfurt airport, Germany’s busiest air cargo hub.
The decision to create the new hub was taken in response to “the positive global development in business and the increasing volumes of freight in its air and ccean business”.
The airfreight hub at Frankfurt is located at the gateway’s CargoCity-Süd logistics.
Rhenus’ European seafreight traffic is now being consolidated through Hilden, also in Germany and, confirmed Jörn Schmersahl, chief executive of Air & Ocean Europe at Rhenus, by consolidating air and sea consignments at the new hubs, the company “aims to make its transport operations more efficient and dovetail them more closely with its overland network”.
The new Frankfurt facility is open 24/7 and can handle a wide variety of cargo types, including temperature-controlled items and hazardous goods.
Goods can be x-rayed for security purposes, and most export cargo consignments are destined for Asia, North or South America, South Africa or the UAE, Rhenus confirmed.
“There are currently capacity bottlenecks in the market place, particularly on the airfreight routes from Europe to the USA, from Europe to China and from China to Europe,” Schmersahl noted.
“Using our gateway at Frankfurt Airport, we want to strengthen our market position by pooling goods and offering our customers attractive rates.”
