Boeing finalises configuration of 787-9

BOEING has announced the firm configuration for the new stretch version 787-9 Dreamliner.

“Firm configuration means the airplane’s structural, propulsion and systems architectures are defined and not changing,” said Mark Jenks, vice-president of 787-9 development, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

The 787-9 will be the first variant of the 787 with a higher maximum take-off weight, but with the same wingspan as the 787-8, allowing it to carry more cargo. Boeing is targeting the 787-9 to compete with both variants of the Airbus A330 and to replace their own 767-400ER.

Air New Zealand is the launch customer. Qantas, Etihad Airways and Singapore Airlines have placed the largest orders for the 787-9.
